Stolen vehicle rams Phillip garage door, swipes police car

ACT police are asking the public for help to find an extensively damaged white Toyota FJ Cruiser that rammed through a Phillip garage door and swiped a parked police vehicle last night, Wednesday 20 July.

Police have released footage of the incident in the hope that Canberrans may have come across the car or witnessed erratic driving after the incident.

About 8.00pm police responded to reports of a suspicious male loitering in the undercroft of an Irving Street apartment complex.

Reports by residents allowed police to run number plate checks which identified that the man was in a stolen vehicle.

As police entered the garage, the man accelerated out of a car space, reaching speeds of 50km/h and drove straight through the closed garage door and into police vehicles blocking the driveway.

The man then mounted the kerb around the parked police vehicles and fled the scene.

The vehicle has extensive damage to its side panels and windscreen.

Police are seeking public assistance in locating and identifying the stolen vehicle and driver.

Anyone who has information or has witnessed the vehicle is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.  Please quote 7165899.
