Stop Work Notice issued for ‘Republic’

Canberra construction company Geocon was issued with a Stop Work Notice for building on the site of their Republic development in Belconnen on 11 July.

The Notice was issued as Geocon allegedly carried out building work that was inconsistent with the development and building approvals.

ACT Construction Occupations Registrar Ben Green said “we will continue to investigate this matter and work with the parties involved to ensure a timely resolution”.

The ACT Government recently introduced a suite of new measures in a “crackdown” on the local building sector, including increased worksite inspections.

In a statement on 11 July, Geocon said the notice relates to “minor, technical issues” on a submitted Development Approval (DA) amendment.

“There are no safety issues associated with the Stop Work Notice. The notice does not call Geocon’s build quality into question. Geocon is working with all relevant authorities to have the matter rectified as soon as possible,” the statement read.

Mr Green said further building work on Geocon’s Republic site was prohibited while the Notice was in place, however work to bring the building back into compliance with the DA is permitted.

Geocon said work on the project is expected to re-commence in the coming days, while Republic is still expected to be delivered ahead of schedule. 750 apartments have already been purchased in the $1 billion mixed-use development.
