‘Inspiring a new way of living’ is surely the perfect way to describe the region of Ginninderry. Known as “Canberra’s most sustainable suburb”, it will one day be home to around 30,000 people with an eventual total of 11,500 homes.
Ginninderry Project Director, Steve Harding, said the suburb is an internationally renowned community that recently scored a rating of 84/100 in their recertification of being an Australian Green Star Community. With construction beginning in 2018, Ginninderry welcomed their first residents in early 2020 and the suburb is set to be a 30-year project.
A shopping centre is approximately five to six years away from being built and until then, Kippax Fair Shopping Centre is five minutes down the road.
Every single home built in the area is required to have 2kW solar panels installed and have no gas connection. There’s a range of housing available including “Missing Middle Housing” – homes with the scale of a house but are multiple units instead. The main roads all have a dedicated off-road bike path to promote more active travel within the community.
There’s a regular bus that loops to Kippax for the residents’ convenience, and a selection of the roads are made from Reconophalt, which is asphalt manufactured from recycled soft plastics, glass, and toner cartridges, which would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
All of the homes have the option of free front landscaping with different, flexible concepts for the owners including native, contemporary, and edible gardens. Additionally, community gardens are being rolled out throughout the development and those already established are “well and truly utilised,” Mr Harding said.
If you’re at Strathnairn, be sure to visit the Link Building to explore the beautiful Art Space, check out the native garden beds, and learn about sustainable living. With breathtaking views across the Brindabellas and the surrounding Murrumbidgee River and Ginninderra Creek, the Ginninderry community value their environmental conservation, which is why 78 per cent of all the trees in the area have been preserved during the building process to protect local wildlife and culturally significant areas.
eat and drink Visit the vegetarian kitchen of Café Stepping Stone at the Strathnairn Arts Complex for their famous Sunset Pizza Night on Fridays (bookings essential).
what’s on There are often community events happening around the suburb such as yoga classes, baking classes, children’s playgroup, and exhibitions in The Link Artspace.
play Ginninderry’s community recreation park is a family-friendly playground with exciting and inventive equipment for the kids to play on, fully enclosed cricket nets, a multi-use sports court, and plenty of space for a barbecue near the pond.
