A 40-year-old man from the suburb of Ngunnawal was caught speeding on a suspended license under the influence of drugs on Sunday and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

The man was caught by ACT Road Policing officers travelling at 96 km/h in the 90 zone on Gungahlin Drive, Kaleen; however, at the time of the speed check he was passing a stationary marked police vehicle which had its red and blue lights flashing and a message of “Slow to 40km/h” displayed.

When the man stopped for police, he stated to officers that his learner licence had expired. Police checks revealed that the licence had been suspended.

A drug screening test resulted in a positive indication to a prescribed drug.

The man will face court charged with driving under the influence of drugs, driving while suspended, speeding, and speeding past an emergency vehicle.

Drivers are required to slow to 40km/h when passing stationary or slow moving emergency services vehicles displaying a blue or red flashing light.

Officer in Charge, ACT Road Policing, Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson said this driver was putting himself, his passenger, other drivers, and police at risk by his actions.

“This driver will face court today after being caught for a virtual shopping list of offences,” Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson said.

“There’s no excuse for driving without a licence, or after taking drugs, or speeding.

“The laws requiring motorists to slow to 40km/h when passing emergency vehicles with their flashing lights operating have been in place for three years. I urge all drivers to pay attention to the road ahead.”
