Sustainability upgrades to public, community housing

Twelve pubic and community housing properties will receive solar and sustainability upgrades worth $365,000, as part of the ACT Governmentโ€™s economic survival package that is providing jobs for Canberrans.

Common Ground Gungahlin is among the properties to receive upgrades, as well as a multi-unit property in Kaleen and 10 other properties that are currently leased to community organisations.

โ€œThis project will deliver lower electricity costs for people in our community who are most in need of support, particularly during the coming winter when electricity bills often grow,โ€ said ACT Housing Minister, Yvette Berry.

โ€œWeโ€™re extending our support through projects like this so that people experiencing vulnerability have the chance to get ahead.

โ€œThis project is part of the governmentโ€™s economic survival package that is providing jobs for Canberrans, while upgrading and renewing infrastructure across the city.โ€

ACT Climate Change Minister, Shane Rattenbury, said the upgrades would also support local jobs, businesses and the community.

โ€œAs well as helping residents and community groups, the sustainability upgrades help the ACT on its goal of addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero.โ€

The project is part of the ACT Governmentโ€™s initiative to fast-track infrastructure projects to support the economy during the COVID-19 crisis.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the program has focused on โ€˜screwdriver-readyโ€™ works that can start immediately and keep local workers employed.

A list of infrastructure and maintenance projects that have already been announced can be accessed via act.gov.au/fasttrack
