New Hivve sustainable transportable classrooms (demountables) have been installed at Majura Primary School as part of the ACT Government’s plan to transition public schools to a net zero emissions future.
Majura Primary School has two transportable buildings, providing four classrooms in total.
Each Hivve transportable costs about $530,000 to supply. Some minor additional installation costs were incurred for pathways, connecting services and landscaping.
ACT Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Yvette Berry, inspected the demountables on Monday morning.
“It was great to see how well the students at Majura were able to use these new spaces,” Ms Berry said. “Transportable learning spaces today are open, spacious, comfortable and exciting learning environments.”
The demountables are fully insulated, and meet current energy targets, Ms Berry said. They are prefabricated and modular to reduce construction waste.
They integrate sustainable building materials, including recycled glass insulation, Australian manufactured insulated wall and floor panels, Australian manufactured composite decking made from recycled plastic and waste timber product, and double-glazed windows.
According to Ms Berry, the classrooms offer all the same comforts and technical/IT infrastructure as a permanent learning space.
They can be powered entirely by rooftop solar and a battery energy storage system; excess energy offsets the school’s energy use.
An energy dashboard provides real-time data on the building’s energy and indoor air quality data, allowing students and staff to learn how building use connects with building performance.
“Transportable classrooms are a part of our strategic plan for student growth across Canberra,” Ms Berry said.
“Every ACT public school is a great school, and as new families settle into the region it is important that every young person can attend a great public school close to home.
“As the city grows, it is vital that our high-quality public education system grows with it. Our significant investments in school infrastructure – including through high-quality transportable learning spaces – form a key part of this Government’s ongoing work in delivering the services Canberrans need not only today or tomorrow but in years to come.”
