Sustainable Travel Street Party will be held in Braddon this month

A street party will be held later this month in Braddon, to showcase sustainable travel and encourage the community to reduce its carbon footprint.

Transport makes up 60 per cent of the ACT’s annual emissions, and the ACT Government considers it one of the biggest opportunities for change to reach their target of net zero by 2045.

The Sustainable Travel Street Party will encourage people to think differently about how they get around the city and how they use urban spaces, Shane Rattenbury, Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, said.

Expert commuters will share advice on their favourite routes, what they wear, and all the latest innovations in sustainable travel technology. The public can try out some of the ‘rides’ on a car-free street.

There will be interactive pop ups, demos, local active transport retailers, advocacy organisations, free activities for kids, food, entertainment, giveaways, and discounts.

“The Sustainable Travel Street Party will showcase car-free travel options including walking, cycling, scooting, skateboarding, public transport and more,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The street party is about celebrating different ways to get around the city. We don’t need to stop driving altogether, but some days we might be able to make a different choice. This event is about making car-free travel as easy and accessible as possible to help Canberrans save money, improve their health, and reduce emissions.

“The free family event will bring the community together through live music, food and on-street entertainment. So come along to enjoy the fun and to find out more about sustainable travel options for getting around our city.”

The Sustainable Travel Street Party will be held in Mort and Elouera Streets, Braddon, on Sunday 24 March. It was rescheduled from November 2023 due to weather and safety considerations.

Transport Canberra Bus and Light Rail services will provide free travel to and from the street party.

More information on the Sustainable Travel Street Party is available on the Everyday Climate Choices website. Final event details, including an event map, will be made available on this website soon.
