Exploding onto the music scene with The Saints in 1973, Ed Kuepper has earned his place in the ARIA Hall of Fame with his long collaborative and solo career. As much of his music has been unavailable to audiences new and old, Kuepper has recently unveiled remastered reissues of his solo albums, Electrical Storm and Honey Steel’s Gold, embarking on a tour to celebrate. Stopping in Canberra at the Street Theatre on Wednesday 20 September, CW caught up with Kuepper ahead of the show.
1. What should audiences expect?
An evening of humour and light-hearted or -headed bonhomie plus hopefully some very good music.
2. What inspired you to re-issue the two albums?
We basically had to start somewhere. My material has been unavailable for a long time, and after consultation with Remote Control we picked these two, which make sense in the context.
Frontierland and Mr Mirakle are scheduled next with lots more to come, hopefully.
3. It’s been nearly 50 years since the release of ‘(I’m) Stranded’. Are you still a punk?
Well, at times I would say I was more of a drunk, but since I’ve stopped drinking, I would describe myself as more of a hunk.
4. Do you have any career highlights?
There definitely would have been some … law of averages and so on would indicate, but still doing what I want to is probably a good highlight for me.
5. Do you have a favourite song to play?
Not really, they change from night to night.
6. What’s next for you?
Working on some new material to record in the new year, doing some shows with the marvellous Asteroid Ekosystem, then with the equally marvellous Jim White once our new record is released. Basically, continuing doing what I’m doing.
