The ACT Government has relaxed rules around takeaway alcohol temporarily, in a bid to support hospitality venues struggling due to COVID-19.
Venues will be able to sell takeaway alcohol and offer it for home delivery until the end of the month. The offer will be available to all on-license venues until 31 July.
Minister for Business Tara Cheyne said the government would be working with businesses who want to take advantage of the offer.
“Canberrans are reminded that this is a great time to support the local businesses that support us,” said Ms Cheyne.
“Money you spend in local businesses goes back into the community and supports local jobs.”
Lockdowns and new travel restrictions across the country over the school holidays has resulted in many travellers cancelling their trips to the ACT.
As well, some venues have reportedly experienced a downturn in customers due to the ACT Government’s mask mandate, with reservations cancelled and less bookings being made.
The Government relaxed takeaway alcohol rules last year due to the pandemic when hospitality venues were forced to revert to takeaway only during the period of Canberra’s harshest COVID-19 restrictions.
