An 18-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences, following the alleged robbery of an elderly man at Belconnen Mall yesterday, Thursday 23 September.
About 12pm yesterday, a 79-year-old male was allegedly approached from behind by three teens.
The elderly man was paying for his goods at a bakery when one of the teens allegedly stole the cash from his hands and ran off.
The three teens were later observed on CCTV footage leaving the location in a black Mitsubishi Lancer.
Late that afternoon, police observed the Mitsubishi Lancer in the backyard of a Holt address.
Police spoke to the resident who stated there were no other people in the house and the teens had abandoned the vehicle at the location earlier.
The resident gave consent for the vehicle to be seized.
While at the Holt address, police identified another teen who was known as having an existing warrant for his arrest, peering through a window of the house.
Police entered the house and arrested the teen. Once inside, police also located another male teenager who was in breach of his bail conditions and he was subsequently arrested. Both of these young teens were confirmed as not being involved with the robbery.
About 11.15pm last night, police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in Macquarie with four occupants and identified one of the men as the alleged 18-year-old offender responsible for the robbery.
The man provided a false name and was unable to tell police where he was travelling to. Police arrested him and he was conveyed to the ACT Watch House.
“People do not need to be fearful, but we urge people to always be aware of their surroundings when out in public,” said Detective Acting Inspector Paul Reynolds.
“If you do feel unsafe, or see any suspicious behaviour, please call Police for assistance.”
The man was subsequently charged with robbery, breach of bail conditions and contravention of Public Health Direction.
He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court today and has been remanded in custody.
