Teens on bail arrested after stealing car in Palmerston

Officers attached to Operation Toric have arrested two teens and recovered a stolen vehicle hours after it was taken.

Yesterday morning, Friday 27 January, residents of a Palmerston home awoke to find their home had been burgled with wallets, cash and a white Toyota Camry stolen.

About 2.00pm yesterday, Operation Toric officers observed the white Camry parked in Giralang.

About 3.25pm a male teenager was observed approaching the vehicle, entering the driver’s seat and starting the engine.

Officers converged on the vehicle and following a short foot pursuit, a 14-year-old boy was arrested.

Following a review of nearby CCTV footage a passenger in the stolen Camry was identified as a 14-year-old girl known to police. This girl approached the scene of the previous arrest in Giralang and was apprehended by police shortly after.

The boy, who was on bail for 18 previous similar offences was charged with drive a motor vehicle without consent, unlicenced driving and breach of bail. The girl (who was also on bail for other offences) was charged with breaching a good behavior (in place since November 2022) and riding in a motor vehicle without consent.

Both young people are scheduled to appear in the ACT Childrens Court today, Saturday 28 January.
