A new 10-year plan will protect Canberra against floods, reduce pollution entering rivers, and enhance urban lakes and ponds, the ACT Government announced this week.
Mick Gentleman, ACT Minister for Planning and Land Management, said the Canberra Urban Lakes and Ponds Management Plan was important to Canberra’s long-term lifestyle and environment.
“We’ve worked closely with the Canberra community to develop a management plan that protects and celebrates our urban waterbodies, while providing the community with plenty of recreational opportunities close to home,” Mr Gentleman said.
The plan covers ponds and wetlands – such as the Kingston Harbour and North Weston Ponds –developed since the plan was last reviewed in 2001.
Local lakes and ponds hold flood waters, control pollution, and provide habitats for flora and fauna.
“This plan will see the effective management of these important community spaces over the next decade,” Mr Gentleman said.
The minister thanked community groups and members who provided valuable input throughout the entire process.
