Tequila bar and restaurant opens on Northbourne

Mezcals Tequila Bar and Restaurant has opened its doors on Northbourne Avenue, offering authentic Mexican cuisine alongside Canberra’s finest selection of Mezcal, a traditional agave-based spirit popular in Mexico.

Owned by brothers Divyansh and Jubin Garg, the venue serves as a restaurant from lunchtime to dinner, featuring a menu of mouthwatering tacos, burritos, nachos, chimichangas, churros, and more. After 9pm, it transforms into a lively bar and nightclub, offering a variety of margaritas, frozen margaritas, sangria, Mexican-inspired cocktails, and shots.

“Our goal is simple–to make people happy,” says Divyansh “Divvy”.

“We’re providing delicious authentic Mexican food that’s made fresh and appeals to all, and a venue that allows people to stay late and continue enjoying the pumping atmosphere we create until the early hours. We want people to leave happier than when they arrived.”

Originating from Melbourne, the brothers are keen to create a successful day to night venue, having worked in them over the last decade.

“We know it’s a concept that is difficult to achieve in Canberra, but we think we can do it. The key is ensuring we provide incredible food and delicious drinks at pocket-friendly prices, as well as a pumping atmosphere and great service,” says Divvy.

The name Mezcals has established itself with its popular Cooma venue. The Canberra kitchen will be led by a chef who specialises in Mexican cuisine, with all menu items made fresh to order.

Popular dishes include the fajita (gluten-free) which is served sizzling hot on a cast iron pan, ready to be loaded into the tortillas with Mexican rice and beans. The birria tacos feature braised beef, served with Mezcal’s signature beef broth for dipping.

The tacos (all gluten-free) cater to all tastes and diets including carnivores, vegans and pescatarians. There is also an option to deep fry the tacos.

The dessert menu includes classics like churros, alongside unique offerings such as a sizzling brownie with melted chocolate and Mezcal’s cinnamon nachos. There’s also a kids’ menu available for families dining during earlier hours.

Mezcals has found its home in the former 5th Avenue Bar location, a strategic move that promotes the venue’s late-night vibe. Upstairs, a function space comes equipped with its own private bar and the ideal space for all types of events from milestone birthdays to hens and bucks’ nights, or afterparties that lead into the early hours.

“We also plan on hosting a bunch of parties like themed music nights and boiler room parties. Our first event is a Christmas-themed burlesque and drag‘ naughty or nice’ event on December 15, which is going to be epic,” says Divvy.
