The ACT Government will provide additional funding to the Canberra United Football Club as they prepare for the launch of the 2023-24 A-League Women season (13 to 15 October).

An additional $125,000 per year will be provided to Capital Football, increasing the performance partnership fee to $250,000 per year for the remaining two years of the current agreement.

Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, said these investments recognised recent changes to the A-League Women competition, including the addition of new teams, more home and away matches, and increases to minimum competition standards.

The ACT Government had supported Canberra United since 2008-09.

“The ACT Government has a well-established partnership with Canberra United, and I’m proud to be able to increase our contribution to the sport,” Ms Berry said.

“After the Women’s World Cup, I have no doubt there will be added interest in the A-League Women competition, and we wish Canberra United all the best as they prepare for the season ahead.”

Ivan Slavich, CEO of Canberra United and Capital Football CEO, said: “We are delighted that the ACT Government has increased the funding for Canberra United to assist with the costs associated with running an elite level football club in the National Capital.

“Running a club to the highest possible standards is an expensive venture, and we are grateful that the ACT government have pledged the additional funding to support Canberra United.
 
In what Ms Berry described as “another boost for local football”, the Estate Development Plan Development Application (DA) for Throsby Home of Football (announced in 2021) has been approved.

Ms Berry said work would now get underway on the detailed design of the new facility. It is intended to be a world-class facility, with outdoor football fields and indoor futsal courts.

“Throsby Home of Football will be a great facility that supports Canberra United, football, and the community well into the future,” Ms Berry said.

“It’s great to have the Estate Development Plan DA approved so we can get on with delivering this important piece of sporting infrastructure.”

Mr Slavich said: “Additionally, we are excited about the prospect the Home of Football in Throsby. This facility is vital to the future of football in Canberra, and Capital Football is looking forward to the commencement of building works.”
