The great outdoors: seven of Canberra’s best beer gardens

When Canberrans get a whiff of warmer weather we are out, in force, strolling around Lake Burley Griffin, hiking up Mount Ainslie or taking to the lake for various water sports. But while action and adventure might be some people’s cup of tea, others might prefer a more leisurely experience of the great outdoors. If your idea of getting back to nature is taking a seat in the beer garden, read on for some tried and tested local spots.

Here are a seven of the best Canberra beer gardens to enjoy a G&T or a beer in the great outdoors. With some reduced capacities due to COVID-19, let’s show our favourite venues some love – just remember to make a booking or call ahead!

1. Capital Brewing

Take a seat in one of two (dog-friendly) beer gardens and try a range of local beers fresh from the taproom.

1 Dairy Road, Fyshwick

5104 0915

2. Rose Cottage

With a shiny new beer garden, Rose Cottage is the perfect place to enjoy a summer drink and a meal under the stars.

Corner of Isabella Drive and Monaro Highway, Gilmore

6260 1314

3. Assembly

From the front, you wouldn’t know this Lonsdale Street pub has a sizeable beer garden out the back, with its own ‘tinnie bar’ and the atmosphere to match.

11 Lonsdale Street, Braddon

6174 0440

4. The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse Pub, or the ‘Lighty’ as its affectionately known by many-a UC alumni, is a beloved Belconnen local with water views.

78-80 Emu Bank, Belconnen

6253 0390

5. Hopscotch

Business at the front, party at the back? Not at Hopscotch! This Braddon bar’s outdoor area is front and centre.

5 Lonsdale Street, Braddon

6107 3030

6. George Harcourt Inn

An old English pub with an Australian-level beer garden – we love to see it!

3 Gold Creek Road, Nicholls

6230 2484

7. Parlour Wine Room

Less of a beer garden and more of a chic, outdoor seating area, Parlour feels a million miles away from the City, like you’re on holiday.

16 Kendall Lane, New Acton

6257 7325

Bonus addition: The Pop Inn

While not technically a venue that’s home to a beer garden, the Pop Inn can turn any of Canberra’s stunning natural areas into one just by driving in and opening up its doors. The pop up wine bar heads to different locations around Canberra every weekend.
