UPDATE 24 June 2021: Based on advice from ACT health the Handmade Market that was due to be held this weekend at EPIC, 25-27 June has been postponed to 16-18 July.
13 June 2021: The ever-popular Handmade Market is coming back, with an in-person market set for Exhibition Park later this month.
After it was forced online last year due to COVID-19, the market will be held on Friday 25 to Sunday 27 June and will host its usual 270 stalls full of locally and Australian-made goodies.
The market bursts back onto the scene with a new name, too. Formerly Handmade Canberra, the business has rebranded to Handmade Australia to more accurately reflect their offering of products from all around the country.
Handmade Australia managing director Julie Nichols said while it’s a “massive relief” to be back in person, the markets did see some success with their pivot to online trading in 2020.
“So the online ones they actually worked really well, it was fantastic in keeping everybody’s business ticking along,” she said.
“It also allowed a lot of customers who would never make it to Canberra to interact with us but it also allowed a lot of stallholders … to join us as well.
“From all of that, it made us think that online is something that we should really consider.”
On that note, she said Handmade Australia will be making a special announcement in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
June’s in-person Handmade Market will of course be subject to COVID-19 restrictions; shoppers will need to check in using the Check In CBR app and secure a (free) ticket to manage numbers.
“There will be the usual amazing things, the Canberra designers, and producers, your artworks, your fashions, awesome food and drink as always … Some new ones as well,” Ms Nicholls said.
“Next for Handmade, it will just be getting back to some kind of normal, then of course rolling out this new fabulous idea as well which will just complement and give you more ways to buy Australian made.”
