Things to do in Canberra this weekend, 16-18 July

If you’re looking to make plans here’s a list of five things to do across Canberra this weekend, 16-18 July.

Arc Out Loud with Labyrinth

1980s childrens classic Labyrinth will be screened at the NFSA’s Arc Cinema on Saturday night as part of an ongoing monthly ‘Arc Out Loud’ series.

For those unfamiliar but curious, Labyrinth sees magical friends and foes meet a musician in extremely tight tights!

The film features songs written and performed by lead David Bowie, who is accompanied in the film by a cast of wonderful, frightening and hilarious puppets produced by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

The Friday 16 July 8pm screening includes a custom-designed scratch ‘n’ sniff card, to take in the smells of a faraway land; book here.

Bangarra bring it

The acclaimed Indigenous dance group are performing their touring production SandSong: Stories from the Great Sandy Desert at Canberra Theatre this weekend until 17 July.

Created by Bangarra Dance Theatre in consultation with Wangkajunga/Walmajarri Elders from the Kimberley and Great Sandy Desert regions, SandSong has been choreographed by Bangarra Artistic Director, Stephen Page.

SandSong tells the unique story of the desert homelands of the Walmajarri people in the Kimberley region and the survival of its People, where between the 1920s and 1960s, Aboriginal people were removed off their Country and forced into hard labour for no wages and minimal rations. Despite this displacement and cultural disruption, the people of the Western Desert have maintained unbroken connection to their Land, keeping stories and kinship strong.

The Ten Tenors

UPDATE: Due to border restrictions and lockdowns, the Ten Tenors’ 18 July concerts have been postponed; rescheduled date TBA.

The Ten Tenors are packing pack 25 years of fun into one night with a 25th anniversary tour, which stops off at the Canberra Theatre this weekend.

Following on from a sold-out tour of Brazil in March 2020, the highly revered group are eagerly waiting to reconnect with fans old and new, with a show that revisits the full history of the group’s catalogue of 15 albums and over 4,000 live performances.

Catch them at the Canberra Theatre, Civic, this weekend on Sunday 18 July 2pm and 7pm; canberratheatrecentre.com.au

Potted Potter

This “smash hit” Harry Potter parody is an award-winning comedic production that takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing all seven Harry Potter books (and a real-life game of Quidditch) into 70 hilarious minutes.

It’s being performed at The Playhouse, Civic, this weekend until 18 July; canberratheatrecentre.com.au

Powerful, riveting drama at The Rep

Canberra REP’s fourth production for 2021, the critically acclaimed Australian play The Governor’s Family has a significant Canberra connection.

It was first performed at the Australian National Playwright’s Conference at the ANU in 1996, and then nominated in 1997 for an Australian Writers’ Guild award and the NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Drama.
