What’s on 30 July
Internationally renowned local band Hands Like Houses return home in late July for their first large-scale Canberra gig in 18 months.
On Friday 30 July from 8pm they will rock UC Refectory with support from Canberra hip-hop icon Citizen Kay, local act Hope Wilkins and Sydney-based Polish Club.; moshtix.com.au
Wiradjuri dancer and writer Joel Bray premieres new work I liked it but… I didn’t know what the f#!k it was about at the Courtyard Studio, Civic, 30 July-1 August. Modelled on the successful Politics in the Pub and Science in the Pub, this 50-minute performance will transform the Courtyard Studio into a bar, complete with a house band and a free drink on arrival; canberratheatrecentre.com.au
Argentinean-Australian pianist Marcela Fiorillo performs a program by Astor Piazzolla to celebrate the composer’s 100th birthday, Friday 30 July 6.30pm at Canberra Girls Grammar School Senior Hall, free entry; tickets here.
What’s on 31 July
Kingston gallery Megalo Print Studio opens new exhibition Colour Separations by Canberra Tony Curran, 31 July-4 September. This vivid series includes abstract prints alongside paintings and digital artworks, which the artist collectively calls ‘Attention Machines’. Taking on the colour palette of the pixel – red, green and blue – Curran questions the effect of smart devices in polarising communities and encouraging binary or ‘black and white’ thinking; megalo.org
Saturday 31 July is your last opportunity to get along to CMAG, Civic to see a truly local exhibition, Don’t Forget the Milk, celebrating 50 years of Canberra Milk at CMAG. Featuring unique dairy objects from the CMAG collection and private lenders, Don’t Forget the Milk is divided with a wall dedicated to Canberra Milk’s tireless and prolific efforts to support local sport and the community. The other wall chronicles the history of dairy farming in the ACT through objects and photos, and even includes some of CMAG’s own objects from their collection, such as old milking aprons and some of the material from Duntroon dairy that clearly demonstrates how much the technology has changed; click here for more.
What’s on 1 August
The ANU is inviting Canberra and the wider community to celebrate its 75th birthday this Sunday 1 August. The University will host a COVID-safe party to mark its incredible contribution to Canberra, the nation and the world over the last seven decades. Highlights include the launch of a living history project and keynote panel on the past, present and future of ANU. Other events include tours of the ANU classics museum and campus architecture, Indigenous heritage walks and stargazing, an exhibition of items in the ANU heritage collection, live science shows, and kids’ activities ranging from archaeological digs and learning how to juggle. Attendance is free with the public encouraged to register via Eventbrite.
One of Canberra’s iconic bands from the early 2000s, Barry Drive, is reforming for a one-night-only show supported by Adi, formerly Beanort, at the Polish White Eagle Club, Turner, 31 July from 7.30pm. Visit the venue’s Facebook page for more.
The Sesame Street Circus Spectacular have extended their season at the Majura Park big top until 15 August. Since its Canberra debut on 25 June, this 90-minute spectacular under the heated big top has put smiles on faces and created priceless memories thousands of families.
