3 men caught drink driving on ACT roads, 1 almost 6 times over limit

Three men face losing their licences and other penalties after being charged by ACT Policing with drink-driving offences.

The first, a 40-year-old Evatt man, was detected about 6pm Thursday 4 August after police received reports from members of the public that a vehicle had collided with gutters in William Webb Drive, Evatt and in the Evatt shops car park.

When police attended, the driver was observed turning his vehicle on and off before attempting to drive away. Police removed the man from his vehicle and subsequent breath testing recorded a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.297, which is almost six times the legal limit.

The man has been charged with drink driving, failing to produce a driver’s licence and failing to undergo an alcohol screening test.

The second, a 46-year-old Gordon man, was arrested after attempting to avoid police on patrol on Tharwa Drive, Conder, shortly after 2am today, Saturday 6 August.

Police will allege that when his vehicle was about 100 metres from the police car, the driver illuminated its high beams. The officers then attempted to approach the vehicle, but the driver proceeded into the suburban streets before pulling into a residential driveway in Chipperfield Circuit, Gordon.

Officers observed the man exit the vehicle. Upon informing him he was required to undertake a roadside screening test, the man repeatedly refused to. He was taken into custody, and continued to refuse to undergo breath analysis at Tuggeranong Police Station.

The man has been issued an immediate suspension notice (ISN), suspending his right to drive in the ACT for 90 days, and will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with using an unregistered vehicle, refusing to undergo a screening test, refusing to provide a breath sample for police, and using high-beam lights on an oncoming vehicle.

The third man, who will also face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning, was stopped by police on mobile patrol in Gordon about 3.55am, who observed a silver Hyundai i30 being driven at speed.

When the driver stopped for police on Ellerston Avenue, Isabella Plains, the driver recorded a positive result for alcohol in a roadside test and was taken into custody.

At Tuggeranong Police Station, the man recorded a BAC of 0.156 and was served with a 90-day ISN.

The 46-year-old man told police he had been drinking at a licensed premises in Greenway and was travelling to drop a friend off, before heading home to Gungahlin.

He was taken into custody and will appear in court this morning charged with level four drink driving.
