Tiny’s Car Challenge, held last Thursday 3 September, has raised over $87,000 for local charities.
The challenge saw 17 participants – the top fundraisers who signed up for the challenge – battle it out to see who could keep their hands on a brand-new Volkswagen Golf the longest with the winner to take the car. The car was donated by Goran ‘Tiny’ Srejic, formerly of the Green Shed, and his wife Elaine.
There was a surprise ending on the day, however, with a three-way tie between participants, Anna, who raising funds for Canberra Street Cat Alliance, Quen for the Domestic Violence Crisis Service and Sam for ACT Rescue and Foster.
All three women decided to split the prize three ways; another participant elected to purchase the car on the day, so the money from the sale and the $5,000 cash prize for second place – donated by Kellie from McIntyre Real Estate – was split between them. They even shared some of the winnings with Ethan, who came fourth, who was raising money for Pegasus.
A total of $87,666 was raised through the challenge, and Tiny told Canberra Daily in July that’s what the challenge was always meant to be about: helping out local charities and showcasing the generosity of the community in and around Canberra.
“I was watching a TV show where they give away cars, and I thought ‘we could do something different where we raise money for charities’,” he said.
“Canberrans, let’s show the rest of Australia we can do it!”
The challenge forms part of Tiny’s 2.5, Tiny’s initiative to raise $2.5 million for local charities in the next five years. There is already talk of another car challenge, with plans in the works to hold it in July next year.
