Re: Nick Fuller’s article ‘Liberals give ACT Government a failing school report’ (CW 24 June 2021, p18): I agree the independent systemic review of the ACT education system is not only needed but long overdue.
For far too long the education in the schools nationwide not just in the ACT has gone downhill. They are spending too much time teaching subjects such as Critical Race Theory, White Supremacy issues, Climate Change (including telling the kids to take a day off to protest) and Gender Fluidity, instead of Literacy and numeracy which are essential to give the children a start in life when they become employed.
Some time ago, I was paying for two items in a local shop. The assistant serving me was in her late teens, The shop did not have a mechanised cash register so she wrote the two amounts down and tried to add them up. She then proceeded to pull out a calculator to add them. I was on the other side of the counter and reading the figures upside down and had them added before she got the calculator out. If children so young and fresh out of school cannot add up, how are they going to cope managing a household budget let alone a business?
