To the editor: Drugs are illegal because drugs are dangerous

Drugs are not dangerous because they are illegal; drugs are illegal because drugs are dangerous. There is no such thing as “soft drugs” and “hard drugs”, nor bona fide criteria to differentiate between these terms.  People who refer to hard or soft drugs generally do not understand the truth about drugs, they may be seeking to soften attitudes towards the use of certain illicit drugs’ use.

The toxic properties of chemical molecules and their cellular damage are not matters of opinion or debate. Research has proven during annual surveys of high school students in US that perception of harm is linked to use: as more young people believe a drug is harmful, fewer use it.

Drugs threaten future generations. Drugs impair male and female functions. The United Nations ban against illicit drugs preceded, by one half century, the international measures taken to protect future generations against external pollutants. Captain Jacques Yves Cousteau stated: “For sheer survival we must defend ourselves against both kinds of pollution which destroy our environment and threaten future generations”.
