Dear Editor,
In his column ‘Fear Blocks the road to Covid freedom‘ (CW, 12 August 2021), Gary Humphries erroneously claims that Hydroxychloroquine is “a type of bleach”.
An easy fact check shows that it’s actually long been a very effective anti-malarial, and it’s sometimes used in treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Some doctors currently use it as part of their treatment for early Covid.*
Maybe some of your readers were mis-informed and would therefore benefit from a correction.
– D. Schneider, Kambah
*FACT CHECK: The Therapeutic Goods Administration recommends against the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 outside of clinical trials.

Dear Editor,
As a former politician, Mr Humphries should stick to political analysis rather than doling out medical advice, clearly illustrating his ignorance in the field by calling hydroxychloroquine “a type of bleach” (CW, 12 August 2021). Even Donald Trump didn’t get that wrong!
The Therapeutic Goods Administration states: “Hydroxychloroquine is used for treatment of malaria and certain autoimmune diseases”.
Mr Humphries, please leave medical advice to trusted, well-informed experts. I for one won’t be taking health advice from you.
