Four years after his death, German-born designer Karl Lagerfeld is the controversial theme of fashion’s biggest night of the year. There was a four-word code for the 2023 Met Gala: “In honour of Karl,” who, over a 65-year career, worked with Chloe, Fendi, Balmain, and Patou. However, he is most remembered for revolutionising the house of Chanel.
While some notable faces were missing on the night, including one Miss Blake Lively, several other celebs jumped at the opportunity to dress to the nines.
Emily Ratajkowski injected her natural bombshell glamour into this Chanel-inspired look. The dove grey gown is Tory Burch, and the hair moment is taken straight from vintage Chanel runways.
Moments after gracing the red carpet, supermodel Anok Yai was declared the best dressed of the evening on Instagram, radiant from head to toe in this stunning design by Prabal Gurung.
Drawing inspiration from ’80s Chanel Haute Couture, supermodel Ashely Graham further accentuated her curves in this dramatic structural gown by Harris Reed.
As far as guests dressing as Lagerfeld’s beloved pet cat, Choupette, go, Doja Cat’s hooded silver gown by Oscar de la Renta was by far the preferred choice. Never one to do things by halves, Doja’s gown reportedly took more than 5000 hours and 350,000 beads to create.
One of the best tweed looks of the night, Anne Hathaway made a ravishing appearance in this white Versace dress, fastened together by the Italian fashion house’s signature gold safety pins.
Jenna Ortega was a living doll in this Victoriana look was designed by Thom Browne. The monochrome colour palette, abundance of gold chains and pearls are all Karl Lagerfeld signatures.
One of the best tributes to Lagerfeld’s signature black suit was Cardi B‘s corseted ballgown, designed by Chenpeng Studio. The extravagant look was worn complete with a wig to channel the honoree’s silver hair.
Thom Browne was a standout designer of the night, with every attendee he dressed appearing on-theme and in a look that complimented their individual style, as seen in this extravagant androgynous ensemble worn by model Sora Choi.
Fashionably late as always, Rihanna stepped onto the carpet in a jacket of enormous rosettes that completely engulfed her torso and head. Then, while ascending the stairs, she removed the coat to reveal a Maison Valentino bridal gown, serving up the theatrics we expect at the Met.
