Top baby names: Charlotte and Oliver take top spot again

For the third year in a row, Charlotte remains the most popular baby name for girls, while Oliver topped the list for boys in the ACT for the second year running.

The top 10 female baby names continue 2021’s theme of shaking things up. Five names not seen in last year’s list cracked the top ten: Isla, Evelyn, Zoe, Ava, and Freya. But they weren’t high enough to push Charlotte from the top spot. Charlotte has been in the top 10 baby names every year since 2003.

For males, Oliver topped the list for the second year in a row, while Henry and William also remained in the top three. Newcomers Arthur, Elijah, and Levi made their top 10 débuts in 2022. The top-ranking male baby name Oliver has remained in the top 10 since 2008.

In 2022, more than 6,200 babies were registered in the ACT, a decrease from the 6,330 registered in 2021.

“While having a new baby is an exciting time, we also recognise that it’s an incredibly busy time for many families,” Tara Cheyne MLA said. “That’s why Access Canberra has made it easier for parents and carers to register a child born in the ACT.

Registration of births is compulsory and must be done within the first six months of a child being born. It’s easy and can be done in just minutes on the Access Canberra website by using the online birth registration form.

The issuing of a birth certificate typically occurs within 15 business days of receiving an application, but times may vary during busy periods.
