Trees fall across Canberra after strong winds

Strong gusts across the weekend and through Monday have brought trees down around Canberra, with the ACT State Emergency Service receiving more than 35 requests for assistance.

One driver has been taken to hospital after a branch fell on his car just before 11am on Phillip Avenue in Downer.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting strong winds could continue so the ACT SES is warning Canberrans to be aware of falling trees, particularly around homes, vehicles, bus stops and other outdoor spaces.

If it is safe to do so, move your car under cover and away from trees, and secure or put away loose items.

If you require assistance, please call the ACTSES on 132 500. In an emergency, call Triple-Zero (000).

Remember, their volunteers are braving the conditions to assist their communities, please only call the service if you have a genuine need for help, such as a fallen tree impacting your property or vehicle – a few small branches in your backyard does not qualify!
