Turn your laundry room from bland to grand

If there’s one room in the house that is perpetually chaotic, it’s most likely the laundry room. It’s generally a tiny space where you spend way too much time. While your laundry may be full of frenzy, a clever design could transform the space to be stylish and functional.

Head of design and innovation at Methven, Andy Grigor, says the laundry is one of the most essential areas in your home.

“A few simple design changes can make a significant difference to the functionality and efficiency of the laundry room, without having to compromise on style,” andy says.

Storage is key

Often one of the smallest rooms of the home, storage solutions are integral to a functional laundry. A top tip is to incorporate as much cabinetry as possible to create extra storage, and add a utility cart to provide moveability. Another option is to add a range of baskets and hampers to help organise, and you can try mounting your iron onto the wall to create more floor space.

Fittings and tapware

In many homes, the laundry is an extension of the bathroom and kitchen, so to keep a seamless flow, try adding fixtures and fittings that are the same colours and styles as the rest of your home.

“Tapware can often define the theme of your room and play a vital role in the functionality of the laundry,” Andy says.

“When choosing laundry fixtures and fittings, think about what you want from your fixtures and your wider laundry design.”

Update your tiles

The tiles in your laundry can drastically change the tone of the room and transform the overall style and feel. If you’re after timeless and simple, try the ever-popular white classic tile, or if you want something unique, you can experiment with block-coloured tiles or patterned ones.

Layout matters

If you have the urge to reconfigure your laundry room during your renovation, just take a moment to re-evaluate. Andy says this can often be unnecessary and not cost-effective. To help make the space feel larger, add some personal touches such as a mirror and plant, which will also enhance the room to make it feel lighter.
