After the opening games of the weekend were affected by Auckland’s weather, the Canberra Cavalry were victorious in both Sunday games against the Auckland Tuatara. 

In the first game, the Cavalry hit the lead with four runs in the top of the Third Innings and were never headed. Robbie Perkins started the scoring when he batted a run in for Jake MacKenzie. Tillman Pugh was the next batsman up and he blasted a Home Run over right Centre Field, batting in runs for Cole Roederer and Boss Moanaroa and making the score 4 runs to nil in favour of the Visitors.

The Tuatara opened their account with a run in the bottom of the fifth, before both teams scored twice in the Sixth Innings – with Michael Campbell and Jake MacKenzie adding to the Cavalry’s tally. 

The Cavalry scored again when Chris Kwitzer crossed home plate in the top of the Seventh Inning – to make the final score 7 runs to 3.

Both teams had six Hits for the game, with Short Stop Jake MacKenzie’s 2 leading the way for the Cavalry.

Cavalry starting pitcher Nick Belzer took the win – on duty for almost six Innings, while giving up 2 Runs from 4 Hits with 4 Strike-outs. The Tuatara’s Toru Murata was the losing Pitcher – lasting 3 Innings while giving up 4 Runs from 3 Hits with 1 Strike-out.

In the second game of the double-header, it was the Tuatara who hit the lead at the bottom of the First Innings. In the bottom of the Third, they doubled that lead.

The Cavalry opened their account with 3 Runs at the top of the Fourth Innings – Boss Moanaroa, Robbie Perkins and Tillman Pugh all crossed Home Plate for the Visitors. With no other scoring, the final score in this game was a 3-runs-to-2 win for the team from Canberra.

The Cavalry led the Hits for the game 7 to 3 – with Second Baseman Cam Warner registering 2.

Cavalry starter Phil Pfeifer was the winning Pitcher, on duty for five Innings with 3 Hits, 2 Runs and 3 Strike-outs. The Tuatara used 5 Pitchers in the game, with Elliot Johnstone being awarded the Loss.

The weekend’s two wins take the Canberra Cavalry’s season record to 14 wins and 16 losses.

Their road to post-season play returns to home territory this week when they face off against the Perth Heat in a four-game series at the MIT Narrabundah Ballpark. The opening game of the series is Thursday 12 January 6.30pm.
