UC Master Plan includes light rail, sports arena

The University of Canberra has outlined plans for a new, more connected campus with the release of the UC Master Plan today, 25 March.

Vice-Chancellor and president Professor Paddy Nixon said the focus is on the growth of students, research and industry partnerships, with the plan proposing a future alignment for light rail on campus and a sports precinct.

โ€œThe Master Plan will see UC become better connected to Belconnen and Bruce with a proposed alignment for future light rail service travelling from Civic through the UC Campus and onto the Belconnen precinct as well as better walking and cycling connections,โ€ Professor Nixon said.

The proposed sports hub would see a new arena, multi-court sports centre and the continuation of the universityโ€™s high-performance sport and associated research.

There also plans for other interconnected campus hubs, including for health, aged care, early learning, retail and housing, which would deliver on-campus services to the Belconnen and Canberra communities.

โ€œThe University of Canberraโ€™s Campus Master Plan embraces the concept of the โ€˜Educated Lifeโ€™ โ€” integrating campus with community through a range of neighbourhoods where people live, learn and work,โ€ Professor Nixon said.

โ€œOur Master Plan leverages the energy that comes with being Australiaโ€™s fastest rising university, paving a way over the next 20 years for a progressive and sustainable campus in the nationโ€™s capital.โ€

More to come.
