Unlicensed driver to face court for speeding, improperly restrained child

A 38-year-old Watson man will face court for speeding, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and driving with a two-year-old child in an unapproved child restraint.

ACT Police allege at about 5.55pm on Saturday 30 January 2021 police, on a mobile patrol on Flemington Road Harrison, observed a Mercedes sedan accelerate “aggressively” from a set of traffic lights.

Police estimate the vehicle’s speed to be more than the 70km/h sign posted speed limit.

A short time later they performed a traffic stop on the vehicle on Wimmera Street, Harrison.

Police checks revealed the driver to be driving while disqualified, the vehicle to be unregistered, uninsured, and displaying incorrect registration plates.

During the traffic stop, police also observed the driver’s two-year-old child in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle was not restrained in an appropriate car seat, wearing only a lap-sash seatbelt.

The driver allegedly could not give a lawful reason as to why the child was not secured in an appropriate child restraint.

In the ACT, children aged from 6 months old but under 4 years old must be secured in either a rear or forward facing approved child restraint with an inbuilt harness, according to current legislation.

The driver will be issued a summons to face court at a later date where he will face charges of speeding, drive while disqualified, driving unregistered, driving while uninsured, numberplates calculated to deceive, and driving with an improperly restrained child.

With school returning from holidays this week, parents are reminded to ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts, and that any young children are travelling in an appropriate car seat.
