Update: Man arrested after Spence shooting

A 22-year-old Bonner man was arrested yesterday, Monday 22 March, after an investigation into a shooting at a Spence residence early in the morning of Thursday 11 March.

The ACT Policing investigation into the Spence shooting commenced after a man presented at Calvary Hospital with serious gunshot wounds. A search warrant executed later that day located several items of evidence including .22 calibre shell casings.

Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman, of ACT Policing Criminal Investigations, said the injuries the victim sustained were significant.

“When the victim attended hospital, he was deemed to be in a critical and unstable condition … there was a period we weren’t able to speak to the victim because their recovery is paramount,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.

“The victim received one gunshot wound to the abdomen and a number of other gunshot wounds.”

The 22-year-old has been charged with two counts of discharging a firearm endangering life and one charge of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and will face the ACT Magistrates Court today.

“The significance of this is a great result for ACT Policing and demonstrates our capability to investigate and apprehend these people that engage in this sort of conduct,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.

He said he could not comment on the motivation for the shooting, but suggested further charges may be laid as the investigation continues.

“I can say the investigation is ongoing and other people are assisting us with our enquiries,” he said.

“I’d like to thank the members of the public who have come forward and assisted us and offered information. I encourage any people out there who have any further information in relation to this incident to contact police.”
