United States Marines from the US Embassy in Canberra gave back to the community last week by gifting toys and joy to children at Canberra Hospital.
On Friday 16 December, the Marines collected toy donations from the US Embassy community and delivered the presents to the Canberra Hospital’s children’s ward.
The initiative is part of the Canberra Hospital Foundation ‘Givemas’ appeal and marks the sixth year the Marines have organised the Toys for Tots toy drive in support.
Gunnery Sergeant USMC Detachment Commander Robert Swift said: “I am grateful for the opportunity to support the Toys for Tots program in Canberra, Australia. By providing toys donated by the US Mission Australia community to boys and girls admitted to the Children’s ward of the Canberra Hospital, I am hopeful they all can enjoy the holiday season.”
CEO of Canberra Hospital Foundation Helen Falla gave a “warm and sincere thank you” to both the US Embassy and Marines for their kindness and generosity.
“These wonderful and unexpected gifts provide a welcome distraction and entertainment for the children and puts a massive smile on little faces,” Ms Falla said.
“In turn, this also helps their parents and loved ones – if they can see a smile on their child’s face, that always helps to reduce anxious moments!”
The US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program in the US has been running for 75 years.
