Fashfest gets fresh
This year, Fashfest has changed things up. “We want to keep fresh for our fans,” says Fashfest co-founder Clint Hutchinson. “This year we’re hosting a series of rolling shows in venues of cultural and historic significance in Canberra, showcasing the beauty of architecture as well as the beauty of the fashion.” Starting this month, Fashfest will roll out the first in a series of fashion shows. The 19 October launch show will be at the iconic National Gallery of Australia followed by shows in December and February to be held in other significant venues. Three of the labels to be showcased include Charly Thorn Designs, Megan Cannings Design and Hajar Gala Couture.

Cooleman Court turns 40
Weston Creek’s Cooleman Court celebrateS its 40th birthday this month. In light of the milestone, the local community has a chance to join in the celebrations by sharing their own Weston Creek stories from over the past 40 years and go into the running to win a $250 Cooleman Court gift card. The area’s rich history will then be commemorated within the walls of the centre for all visitors to enjoy. “Cooleman Court has always been closely involved in its local community. In fact, the centre’s name was selected from those nominated by the community 40 years ago. Cooleman Court, a name of Aboriginal origin meaning food basket, was chosen. The community also designed and selected the centre’s first ever logo. Back in the day, the centre was the first of its kind in Canberra and cost an impressive $10 million to build,” says Cooleman Court marketing manager, Laura Howes.

Rise & Resist book launch
Vogue magazine’s first ever Sustainability Editor-at-Large, Clare Press, will be the special guest at a book launch and exclusive clothes swap taking place at East Hotel, Kingston on Saturday 13 October. Hosted by eco stylist, Nina Gbor, founder of Clothes Swap & Style Canberra, the collaboration is an innovative event that will launch Clare’s second book Rise & Resist: How to Change the World. Camping boosts health
Following National Women’s Health Week (3-7 September) where Australian women were encouraged to focus on their health, research has revealed important benefits of caravan and camping trips. Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s Real Richness Report examined the benefits of caravan and camping trips, with the results revealing those who regularly went on these trips are happier, more satisfied and energised than non-campers. Of the women surveyed, 55% strongly agreed that caravan and camping trips can make you healthier. The research revealed both physical and mental benefits, with 74% strongly agreeing that camping helps them “recharge their batteries”, 63% strongly agreeing it relieves stress, and 51% strongly agreeing it can make you fitter.
