What’s on in Canberra this weekend, November 15-17

There’s an exciting lineup of events this weekend, featuring new exhibitions, a thought-provoking debate on technology and women in ICT, vibrant fetes and energising live music.

Drizzle Boy: Drizzle Boy is autistic. He is poked, prodded and diagnosed by a world that wants to change him and a family who doesn’t understand him. Then, on his first day of university, he meets Juliet and suddenly everything seems possible! Print Market + Wayzgoose Exhibition opening: The Print Market is an opportunity to showcase your art to Megalo’s audience and the local community during the holiday season. It will be held in conjunction with the opening of an exhibition for printmakers everywhere, the inaugural Megalo Wayzgoose. WIC 2024 Annual Dinner Debate: Talented women elevating Canberra’s information and communication technology industry will be applauded for their career achievements at this year’s Women in ICT Awards. A dinner debate on the topic, ‘technology is making us stupid’, will also run on the night. Reflecting Moods:
16 November-15 December

LOOP (Looking Out for our Planet): Showcasing the work of local artists Yalan Chen, Michele England and Jo Mahler-Fenderson, featuring paintings and textile pieces that consider multiple aspects of sustainability and hope for the future. Barton ArtBox, 7 Young Street, Barton, nibbles and drinks opening with the artists 15 November 5:30pm-7:30pm. The exhibition runs until 24 November.

Power Brooch: A range of artists showcasing their jewellery’s capacity to express and communicate the theme power brooch, whether it is subtle, express sentimental connections or even convey part of the personality of the wearer, Bilk Gallery, 403 Captains Flat Road, Carwoola, opening runs 16 November 11am-5pm, the exhibition runs until 14 December; bilk.com.au/power-brooch-group-exhibition

Ripple Effect Band: The all-female “saltwater rock” band from Maningrida in Arnhem Land bring their infectious energy to Gang Gang Cafe on Saturday 16 November from 7pm. Their new album, Mayawa, sung in a mixture of their different traditional dialects, has garnered widespread acclaim; rippleeffectband.com.au/shows

Holy Family Primary School Christmas Fete: At the fete there will be pony rides, face painting, mermaid hair, rock climbing, amusement rides, show bags, toys, books, crafts, books and more. Some of the foods on offer include kebabs, chip on a stick, nachos, Devonshire tea, lollies, ice cream, coffee and traditional barbecue. Holy Family Primary School, Gowrie, 16 November, 10am-2pm.

The Gbedu Music and Dance Concert: An annual concert that features local Afro talents in Australia. The aim of the event is to showcase local talents, including artists and dancers, to create an avenue for networking for entertainers. Just Human book launch: Canberra author Angel Hellyer will launch their new novel, Just Human. Hellyer will read the first chapter and share their inspiration, followed by a Q&A session. Canberra Choral Society: Mendelssohn’s Elijah
Canberra Choral Society presents Elijah, Felix Mendelssohn’s Biblical masterpiece, conducted by Brett Weymark OAM. Starring acclaimed operatic bass Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Elijah and National Opera in Canberra soloists soprano Sonia Anfiloff, mezzo soprano Christina Wilson and tenor Damian Arnold. With a mass choir of 170 singers from CCS and the Canberra community, and a 42-piece orchestra. Book via Ticketek.

Pattern Recognition: It celebrates female and non-binary artists from the ACT region who use abstraction and design principles to explore colour perception and spatial relationships, highlighting the various ways artists approach colour, geometry, and form.  A collaborative project presented as part of the 2024 Craft + Design Canberra Festival, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Parkes, exhibition runs until 25 January 2025; ccas.com.au/current
