It is 1939. In Los Angeles, Private Detective Phillip Marlowe (Liam Neeson) is as restless and lonely as ever, and business is a little slow. Then a new client arrives: young, beautiful and expensively dressed, Clare Cavendish (Diane Kruger), daughter of Hollywood actress and screen icon Dorothy Quincannon (Jessica Lange), who wants Marlowe to find her former lover, a small time drug dealer and lothario named Nico Peterson. Marlowe’s investigation takes him to the Corbata Club, an exclusive focal point and den of iniquity for the rich and powerful of Los Angeles, managed by Floyd Hanson (Danny Huston), a seeming pillar of society but gatekeeper to the sleazy underworld that lurks within. As the story of Nico’s ‘accidental death’ unfolds, Marlowe is less than convinced. It transpires that the death has been staged – Nico is still alive – and soon Marlowe finds himself not only under the spell of the seductive Ms Cavendish but tangling with the scandalous underbelly of Hollywood’s burgeoning film business along with one of Bay City’s richest families and most powerful men and women – while developing a singular appreciation for how far they will go to protect their fortune.
