Women motorcyclists rode from Parliament House to Bungendore on Saturday to raise awareness of female-specific cancers, and funds for the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day.
Thirty motorcycle riders – members of the Female Riders of Canberra (FRoC) and the Gorgeous Ladies on Wheels (aka GLOW) NSW and ACT Chapters – departed from Old Parliament House (Museum of Democracy) at 11:00 am.
Riders on creatively decorated motorcycles and scooters tooted horns and waved to spectators.
The group was led by Sonia van den Berg, lead co-ordinator of the Female Riders Group of Canberra.
They rode in single file lap of the King George Terrace circuit before crossing the Kings Avenue bridge en route to Bungendore.
The return trip via Macs Reef Road and the Federal Highway concluded at the National Arboretum.
The group had set a goal of $500; their fundraising efforts exceeded that, with a total of $525.00 from local businesses Alinta, Flock at the Carrington, Sibu Beauty, Canberra Workwear (which also donated the riders’ pink hi-vis vests), and individual members of FRoC and GLOW.
FRoC was established in 2016 to support and encourage a growing number of women in Canberra learning or returning to riding after a long interval. FRoC now has more than 1,100 members and increases daily.
“We aim to inspire all women to enjoy motorcycle riding,” Ms van den Berg said. “Being part of a supportive female-only group helps women build their skills and their confidence.”
