Last night Kelli-Ann Jackson was crowned ACT Woman of the Year for her work leading Women’s Adventure ACT.
The volunteer-led, community-organised group treks to keep the outdoors safe and accessible to women and gender-diverse people of all backgrounds.
Ms Jackson was one of the early members of Women’s Adventure ACT, stepping up as leader in 2018 just a year after the group was established.
The world trekking adventurer had previously ridden the length of Taiwan and South Korea on a unicycle and became the first person in the world to unicycle in North Korea.
As leader of Women’s Adventure, she has helped boost the knowledge, outdoor skills, safety-awareness, fitness, and confidence of over 4,100 Canberran women.
Hundreds of events are held by the organisation each year, including walks at the National Arboretum, bush-foraging and weaving workshops led by local Indigenous educators, and even sea kayaking trips in Far North Queensland.
In addition to organising and leading events, Kelli trains other volunteers in building the skills and confidence to become group activity leaders themselves.
23-year-old Asha Clementi was also named the ACT Young Woman of the Year last night, for founding ‘Girls Run the World’ and co-founding ‘The Girls Leadership Network.’
The programs inspire young women to pursue leadership and engage in diplomacy, by providing participants the opportunity to spend a day in a participating Embassy.
Clementi was just 18 when she founded The Girls Leadership Network.
Finally, Lee-Anne Daley was named the 2022 ACT Senior Woman of the Year.
Ms Daley is a Wiradjuri woman, working with parents, carers, aunties, and grandmothers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to share and engage with cultural knowledge.
She also facilitates The Koori Girls group, which works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls to build links within the community.
The Koori Girls group focuses on mentoring towards healthy lifestyle choices, confidence building, creative arts, and future pathways.
“Congratulations to all the nominees in the 2022 ACT Women’s Awards for their outstanding contributions to our community,” said Minister for Women, Yvette Berry.
“Our three winners are all incredible individuals and wonderful examples of the strength, passion and dedication so many Canberran women share.”
