The Young Matildas have lost 2-0 to Brazil in their weather-interrupted second match at the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
The Australians were unable to back up their impressive 3-1 win over hosts Costa Rica in their opener three days earlier as Brazil dominated their clash at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela.
Striker Priscilla opened the scoring for Brazil in the 26th minute.
Two minutes later the match was stopped for an hour due to lightning and a rain deluge which had puddles forming and the ball holding up on the pitch.
Once play resumed Brazil went up a level with quick and slick ball movement and midfielder Alina completed the scoring in the 46th minute.
The goal appeared to be ruled out, but a five-minute VAR intervention saw it stand.
Brazil had eight shots on target to Australia’s one, keeping goalkeeper Sally James busy.
Australia began to find some more sustained possession in their attacking half as the game progressed with Bryleeh Henry often the outlet down the right-hand flank with Sarah Hunter and Daniela Galic working hard to drive forward.
The introduction of the likes of Abbey Lemon, Cushla Rue and Paige Zois added more attacking impetus, but Australia couldn’t find a goal to get back into the match.
The Australians next play Spain in their final pool match on Wednesday (AEST).
