Young prop Trey Mooney re-signs with the Raiders

The Canberra Raiders have confirmed the re-signing of young prop Trey Mooney on a three-year deal that will see him remain in the nation’s capital until at least the end of 2027.

Mooney has been one of the big improvers in 2024 and has played all seven matches since returning to the NRL team in round six.

The 22-year-old said he’s excited about the opportunity that lies ahead for him over the coming seasons and knows he still has plenty of improvement in his game.

“I’m happy to extend my time here. This is a family club and something I want to be a part of going forward,” Mooney said.

“I’ve spent some time behind a lot of good forwards here. Hopefully, I’m making my mark slowly and still fighting for a spot and I’m just happy to be playing consistent footy at the moment.”

Mooney said this season has been helpful for his development, and he’s been relishing the opportunity to learn from two of the best forwards in the game.

“I’ve felt really good this year. My first few games, I was just getting used to the speed and intensity of the NRL but I’m definitely enjoying my footy at the moment and feel like I’m getting better each game,” he said.

“Papa (Papalii) and Taps (Tapine) have been massive for my development as a player here, so just being able to learn off them, pick their brains to see what they do as a middle forward has been awesome.

“The main goal for me is to just win games. Hopefully, I can stay here for a bit longer and win a premiership in the next few years. We have a young squad here and I feel like we could create something here.”

Raiders NRL Recruitment Manager Joel Carbone said Mooney was yet another example of a player who the club has developed and given an opportunity to.

“Trey has had the chance to come through our pathway system and build into his career,” Carbone said.

“The coaches have done a wonderful job preparing him for the transition from a pathway player to the NRL and have continued to give him the tools and time to best utilise his talent.

“We know the best of Trey is yet to come and we’re looking forward to seeing his continued growth over the coming years.”

The Raiders take on the Cowboys at GIO Stadium this Friday night at 6pm. Click here for tickets.
