An estimated crowd of 12,000 people attended the Remembrance Day Ceremony, held at the grounds of the Australian War Memorial on Sunday 11 November.
The ceremony marked 100 years since the end of World War I on 11 November 1918. Of the 414,000 Australians sent to fight, almost 62,000 died during the more than four years of continuous conflict.
The Australian War Memorial continued the tradition of observing a minute’s silence at 11am, with the Commemorative Address delivered by Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Epitaphs from First World War graves were read by Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten. Former Prime Minister Paul Keating also attended the ceremony on the 25th anniversary of his delivery of the Eulogy for the Unknown Australian Soldier.
Around 280 school children attended the event from seven schools across Australia. Representing the more than 102,000 names on the Memorial’s Roll of Honour, 11 students participated by laying a Commemorative Cross at the Stone of Remembrance.
