Australians may froth over their Triple J Hottest 100, but there are some beer lovers out there frothing over another top 100 countdown.
Mountain Culture’s Status Quo Pale Ale has been declared the nation’s number one beer in the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular’s Hottest 100, beating well known brewers like Coopers and Mountain Goat.
It follows Canberra brewers Bentspoke taking the trophy for two consecutive years with their Crankshaft IPA in 2020 and 2021.
However the former champion slipped into third place, ahead of Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale, another former three-time blue ribbon winner.
Balter’s XPA, which was number one in 2017 and 2018, was runner up on Saturday.
Mountain Culture’s winning beer was a debutant to the list.
Scrapping into the list was We Jammin’ from One Drop Brewing Co, the can decked out in trippy colours in reference to Bob Marley’s predilections.
Willie The Boatman’s The Albo, a pale ale which dons Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s young likeness, was 56th.
A non-alcoholic beer also made the top 100 suds, with Heaps Normal’s Quiet XPA making 33.
The top 10 included the Adelaide-born green classic, Coopers’ Pale Ale.
Great Australasian Beer Spectapular managing director Mike Bray said the festival was fantastic for the industry and it was good to see the beers flowing.
“It provides a national platform for consumers to say thank you to the incredibly talented brewery business across Australia,” he said.
