Elders Batemans Bay: Canberra’s coastal connection

Based on the beautiful NSW South Coast, Principal of Elders Batemans Bay, Rebecca Shepheard, believes her agency is “Canberra’s coastal connection”.

Tell us how you got into the industry.

I had been working in banking, noticed a new agency open in our local area and applied for a receptionist position. The rest is history.

I loved that each day was different. With so many aspects to the real estate world, no day was the same.

What do you love about your job?

What’s not to love! We get to meet so many people from different walks of life, each with their own requirements. We also get invited into some amazing homes.

As principal of my own agency, my job is varied – whether it be nurturing a great culture for my team to thrive but still being hands-on with selling and managing property.

What is the most rewarding part of working in real estate?

Being able to assist people, whether it be selling their biggest asset to buying. It’s all about the connection. Seeing the joy in someone securing their home or selling to be able to enjoy their next adventure is so rewarding.

What has been your biggest highlight?

One I will always remember is my first million-dollar sale of a property that was very close to my heart, where as a child I spent school holidays camping and enjoying the national parks around; to have the opportunity to then sell the property and to impart the many stories of growing up and enjoying the area.

What advice would you give young people considering a career in real estate?

It is one of the most rewarding careers. It is not easy, but if you put in the hard work and enjoy what you do, it won’t feel like a job. It will be your lifestyle.

What does it take to be successful in the industry?

Being able to talk to people, being open to new ideas, being consistent in what you deliver, being genuine and transparent.

What are your core values?

To be genuine, to be transparent. To look after everyone as I would like to be looked after myself. No judgement.
