A 44-year-old-man has died after an altercation at a hotel in Canberra’s Inner South suburb of Griffith last night, Sunday 5 July.
ACT Policing are still investigating the circumstances of the altercation between the deceased and one other male but at this stage, no one is in custody over the incident.
The incident occurred inside the Kingston Hotel where around 20 to 30 other patrons were present at the time.
An ACT Policing spokesperson said they were called to the scene by ambulance officers who were working with staff to treat the man, but he died on the scene.
ACT Policing are still seeking the family of the deceased male and will not release any personal details until they have been contacted.
The exact cause of death is not yet known but ACT police are in the process of forensically investigating the man’s injuries.
It is not known if there was a previous relationship between the deceased male and the involved party.
An ACT Policing spokesperson said they had “a number of inquiries” to make after interviewing the witnesses and were actively seeking additional information and witnesses.
“ACT Policing criminal investigations are still reviewing CCTV footage and still interviewing witnesses, so at this stage we are unable to say what happened,” the spokesperson said.
They said any witnesses who felt they needed mental health support services could contact ACT police for help.
“Obviously, this was a very distressing incident for members of the public and for the staff.”
