Reclink Community Cup
Some of the capital region’s finest musicians took on the local media in a game of Australian Rules Football, raising money for charity on Sunday 16 September at Jamison Oval. The Noise (media) held a tight lead for most of the match, but two late goals saw The Limestones (musicians) prevail by 11 points, 9.3.57 to 7.4.46, in front of around 400 spectators. The match raised more than $5,000 for Reclink, a charitable organisation that looks to provide opportunities for disadvantaged members of the Canberra community.
Capital Football
Belconnen United won the women’s premier league first grade grand final over Canberra FC 3-1 in a dramatic fashion at McKellar Park on Sunday 16 September. Going in to half time drawn at 1-1, a 74th-minute goal to Karen Clarke followed by an 87th-minute goal to legendary local striker Caitlin Munoz gave Belconnen the win.
Be The Best You Can Be Sports Day
Around 350 ACT school students with a disability got out to the AIS Track and Field Facility to take part in the Be The Best You Can Be Sports Day on Tuesday 18 September. The carnival involved students from over 15 Canberra primary schools, high schools and colleges. The students participated in a rotation of modified activities including sprints, long jump, soccer, basketball, a modified rugby program, rugby league and an obstacle course.
Tennis
Bruce Larkham and Thomas Charles Boag have been inducted into the Tennis ACT Walk of Fame on Saturday 15 September at the 2018 Tennis ACT Awards. Larkham was the first Canberran to travel to Europe to play competitively; competing in the Wimbledon qualifying singles and mixed doubles main draw. Boag established himself as one of the best players in the ACT during the 1930s and played a pivotal role in the development of Reid Tennis Club, where he was Secretary for several years, then stood as President for 12 years, and was later declared a Life Member.
Pencak Silat
A 13-strong team representing the ACT in the South-East Asian martial art will compete at the 7th Australian National Pencak Silat Championships, on 30 September, at Bankstown Basketball Stadium, Condell Park, NSW. The team, comprising athletes ranging from eight to 47 years of age, will compete at the event that will act as a qualifier to form an Australian national team for a world tournament to be held in Singapore in December.
Raiders
The Canberra NRL team’s major sponsor Huawei, earlier this month donated $31,875 to the Ricky Stuart Foundation for money raised during this year’s #AutismWellbeing round at GIO Stadium. The total from this year’s efforts brings the fundraising initiative to a grand total of $91,310 over the past three seasons. Huawei has helped use the annual fixture to raise awareness of the #AutismWellbeing message by giving up their regular position on the front of the Raiders specially designed jersey to help promote the initiative.
Brumbies
A number of off-season signings over the past few weeks include youngsters Bayley Kuenzle, Tom Ross and Noah Lolesio, all of whom have joined the side’s wider playing squad. The Brumbies have also signed imports Pete Samu (Crusaders), Toni Pulu (Chiefs), Murray Douglas (Hurricanes), Irae Simone (Waratahs), and 21-year-old code hopper Tom Wright, a rugby union schoolboy prodigy who plays inside-backs; he will come to Canberra for two years from the NRL’s Manly Sea Eagles. Local hooker Connal McInerney has also been upgraded to the side’s senior list.
NRC
The Canberra Vikings earned a win against the Western Force at Viking Park on Sunday 17 September. It was a brutally tough match, but Canberra showed quality in attack when they got clean ball, and were able to score four magnificent tries. The Vikings will play away next weekend against the NSW Country Eagles on 23 September before their final home fixture, hosting the Melbourne Rising on 29 September; canberravikings.com
GWS Giants
Their 2018 AFL campaign ended with a 10-point loss to the Collingwood Magpies at the MCG on Saturday 15 September. The pro-Magpie crowd of 72,504 erupted when the siren confirmed a 9.15.69 to 9.5.59 triumph that earned Nathan Buckley’s men a preliminary final date against defending champions Richmond.
