Input sought on improving Yerrabi Pond

Local Gungahlin residents and the wider Canberra community can have their say on improving Yerrabi Pond.

Chris Steel, Minister for Transport and City Services, said the ACT Government would improve the popular recreation spot following an Assembly motion moved and passed by Labor MLA Michael Pettersson.

“We recognise just how popular this recreation area is, and we want the community to provide feedback on how they use the space, and what outcomes they would like to see from improvements in the area,” Mr Steel said.

Yerrabi Pond has changed much since it opened in 1999, Mr Steel said; additions include playground facilities, more walking and cycling paths, and a skateboard area.

Last year, a new nature play space was opened, featuring a central climbable turtle, percussion instruments, sandpit, balancing equipment, and natural log and boulder steppers.

Mr Pettersson said he looked forward to speaking with the community about improvements to Yerrabi District Park and Yerrabi Pond park, and that he was open to improving other areas as well.

Consultations are open until 4 June. People can complete a survey on the YourSay website. Pop-up sessions will be held at Yerrabi Pond District Park in coming weeks.

Mr Pettersson also praised the Friends of Yerrabi Pond group.

“Support from volunteers is important in helping us achieve the outcomes that the community wants. This group will provide a hands‑on way to conserve and maintain Yerrabi pond.” More information on volunteering opportunities online.
