Canberra’s Ivan Soldo signs three-year extension with Richmond

AFL premiership ruckman Ivan Soldo has re-signed with Richmond until the end of 2024 in a timely and important boost to the Tigers’ ruck stocks.

Richmond’s tall stocks are set to take a serious hit this off-season, with Mabior Chol to join Gold Coast as a free agent and Callum Coleman-Jones tipped to also depart via a trade to North Melbourne.

Both players featured throughout this season as key forwards who also spent time in the ruck.

But retaining Soldo until the end of 2024, with three-time flag winner Toby Nankervis already signed until after the 2023 season, relieves some pressure.

The Tigers also have youngster Samson Ryan, who debuted this year, waiting in the wings.

Soldo, a former Daramalan College student, hasn’t played since rupturing his ACL in round 17, 2020, which saw him miss out on that year’s premiership, with the Tigers taking a patient approach to the 25-year-old big man’s recovery.

He previously averaged 20.9 hitouts across 36 games since his 2017 debut, including winning the 2019 grand final.

“Across more than seven years at Richmond, Ivan has shown an outstanding work ethic and willingness to improve his game,” Richmond general manager of football talent Blair Hartley said.

“His knee injury late last year was very unfortunate, but he has worked hard throughout this season to put himself in a position to return strongly in 2022.

“Ivan is a key member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next year.”
