Poignant photograph reflects colours of Ukrainian flag

Canberra photographer John Brookes submitted this poignant photograph to Canberra Daily for publication. Its colours remind the photographer of the Ukrainian flag, a country currently under attack from Russian forces, although the local setting is far more peaceful.

Mr Brookes explains how he came to take the photograph:

“I am a freelance photographer based in Canberra. I have exhibited my works at galleries across the ACT. I have background in community charity promotion which I put to use with local community organisations and events such as Belco Arts, Fair Canberra, Wellways, as well as Enlighten and the National Multicultural Festival.

“The photo is one I took of my nephew, Joshua, a few years back. We were walking through a local grain field and he stopped to contemplate the long path ahead and wonder where it led. It seemed like a poignant image of childhood uncertainty and potential which I was able to quickly grab.

“With its mirroring of the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, and its theme of an uncertain future for the country’s children, it now seems more poignant – and tragic – than ever.”

In association with Amnesty International ACT/SNSW, Canberra will hold a Vigil for Ukraine on Friday 11 March 5.30pm at the Rotary Peace Bell in Nara Peace Park, Yarralumla.
