The ACT Government is calling for feedback on the implementation of a scheme for the registration of professional engineers.
“An engineer registration scheme will give the public and businesses confidence that the engineers they engage have the necessary qualifications and experience to provide engineering services,” Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for Sustainable Building and Construction, said.
“It is vital that Canberrans know that their projects are being scoped, designed, and delivered safely, to budget, and on time, by qualified professionals. The scheme is supported by professional engineers’ associations, and will bring the ACT into line with other Australian states and territories.
“Initially, it is proposed that the scheme will apply to five engineering disciplines – civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire safety engineering – but may later be expanded.
“Implementing an engineer registration scheme will provide a nationally consistent approach to the registration of certain categories of building practitioners, including engineers, which was a key recommendation in the Building Confidence Report.
“We want to hear from the community and individual engineers on elements of the scheme, such as eligibility criteria and implementation, so we can make sure the scheme achieves its objectives.”
Following community and stakeholder consultation on the proposed scheme, the scheme will be finalised with legislation prepared and presented to the Legislative Assembly in late 2022.
This initiative progresses a commitment of the Parliamentary Agreement of the 10th Legislative Assembly by the ACT Labor-Greens Government.
