Canberra Autism early education centre hosts open day

The Canberra Region AEIOU is opening its doors tomorrow morning, Wednesday 12 October, welcoming families with children under five who have received or are currently going through the process of an autism diagnosis, carers, and those interested in early autism intervention.

The bright and colourful education facility invites families to learn about the services they offer and how they can help children who may not be accepted into mainstream early school options. There will be a workshop that aims to assist them through those early years of an autism diagnosis.

Children at AEIOU receive care catered to their individual needs.

The AEIOU Foundation was established in 2005 by Associate Professor James Morton AM and his wife Louise. They are parents of a boy with autism, and when they witnessed how hard it was for their child to receive care and quality services, they knew they had to intervene. Now their Foundation supports both the family and the child who has received the diagnosis through purpose-built facilities that ensure children aged between two and six years receive care unique to their individual needs. Teams of therapists and early childhood educators work together to provide a welcoming atmosphere that fosters growth and developmental opportunities, while parents are also supported with training, engagement sessions and workshops.

The Canberra region centre is located in Garran and began operating last year, but waited until August this year to celebrate its official launch. The centre currently has the capacity to support 40 children and their families, and has announced plans to expand its reach further with another room in the facility.

Attendees at the open day will receive a tour of the centre, an information pack on the curriculum, the workshop, and opportunities to speak to the team.

AEIOU Foundation is an approved National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider.
