ACT population passes 450,000 residents

Data released from the 2021 Census has revealed the number of people residing in the ACT has grown by 14.4 per cent since the previous census five years earlier, making it the highest growthย rateย of all the states and territories in Australia.

On Census night, Tuesday 10 August 2021, the ACTย recorded a population of 454,499 people, compared toย 397,397 in 2016.

Although an increase in population is to be expected, a growth of this size has ramifications at both the localย and federal levels. The latest Estimated Resident Populationย conducted in the September quarter of 2021 was still more than 21,000 people below the figures that have been released. The increase means national funding arrangements will need to be reconsidered, including the distribution of GST.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will need to conduct further research into the high percentage of growth, given the implications it will have on future funding distributions.

The ACTย Government have said they are already collaborating with the newly appointed Albanese Labor Government to ensure the ACT receives itsย fair share of funds, noting bothย governmentsย have shared values and priorities when it comes to important issues like housing, healthcare, and education.

On the issue of GST distribution, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr saidย โ€œnow is the time to invest in our city, in infrastructure that is built for Canberra, to ensure the Canberra of 2030 continues to be one of the most liveable cities in the worldโ€.

Amongย the main things on the agenda for the upcoming ACT Budget areย significant investments in infrastructure, schools,ย and hospitals.
